“Everything that we do is in service of ourselves,” says Katy Chryst, health coach and body image expert. In this episode, Katy talks with host Brooke Collins about her coaching work, which is rooted in the idea that poor body image makes it nearly impossible for us to have consistent, healthy habits.
Katy’s research is focused on developing functional motivation; motivation that stems from us feeling better, enjoying our activities, and having more energy. The opposite of that is, of course, motivation rooted in shame or self-hatred -- which many women especially rely on to exercise often and eat well. But studies show consistently that shame and self-hate aren’t sustainable ways to motivate ourselves -- and that we actually feel better and lose more weight when we enjoy what we’re doing, because we aren’t as stressed out.
Katy and Brooke talk about shame, self-love, and how to reframe from why do I look like this to how is this serving me in this inspiring episode of Desperately Seeking Self.
