Spirituality – How It’s Impacted By The TIBI 12 Minute A Day Methodology

In this episode, John and Kelly discuss spirituality – and how that part of your life is impacted by the think it be it 12 minute a day technique. Spirituality starts by having a compelling mission statement the drives you forward. Typically this mission statement will be about 50 words long. It will also be emotional. John reads what his empowering purpose mission statement is. He says the top book the world on success is think and grow Rich. God chose me to reveal it’s full secret to the world. What I’ve created is life-changing. And only I can give this to the world. I teach people the practical way to create the exceptional life rather than the average life. If I had learned at 20 what I learned at 50, what a difference that would’ve made. I’m giving people a true advantage in life. Changing the world one person at a time and one class at a time. Getting gratification internally. From seeing the specific lives I’m dramatically impacting. Plus I’m self-actualizing to level beyond what I’ve ever experienced before. Kelly then mentions how one’s purpose needs to be other people driven. Helping other people. John and Kelly talk about meeting the well-known sports psychologist Michael Gervais. He works with the Seattle Seahawks. A few years ago John and Kelly met with him in Seattle. And he explained this concept of having each player have a powerful mission statement . As John and Kelly discuss this topic further, John talks about what he reads to himself each day regarding dealing with the frustrations with people. That everyone is a combination of their genetics coupled with what has come into their consciousness to this point in their life. Of course they don’t see things the same way John does. John also talks about something that gives him great comfort from a spiritual standpoint. How he is providing personal growth to his three grandchildren once they reach adulthood. To wrap up this discussion, John and Kelly talk about how the think it be it template is a combination of specific actions as well as giving oneself perspective on one’s life.

John’s story is pretty amazing. After spending 20 years as an entrepreneur, John was 50 years old but wasn’t as successful as he thought he should be. To rectify that, he decided to find the “top book in the world” on SUCCESS and apply that book literally Word for Word to his life. That Book is Think & Grow Rich. The book says there’s a SECRET for success, but the author only gives you half the secret. John figured out the full secret and a 12 minute a day technique to apply it.

His daily technique works because it focuses you ONLY on what moves the needle, triples your discipline, and consistently generates new business ideas every week. This happens because of 3 key aspects of the leveraging process.

John’s technique was profiled on the cover of Time Magazine. He teaches it at the University of Texas’ McCombs School of Business, which is one the TOP 5 business schools in the country. He is also the “mental coach” for the head athletic coaches at the University of Texas as well.

Welcome to Think It Be It the podcast. I'm Kelly Hatfield.



John Mitchell:

Hey. And I'm John Michell. So today, our topic is spirituality, how that part of your life is impacted by our 12 minute a day technique. So Kelly, you know, I think one of the most powerful things about our technique regarding spirituality is this idea of having a compelling mission statement that that drives you. And, you know, I remember back a few years ago, when you and I went to the Seattle Seahawks facility and met with with Michael Gervais, who is one of the top three or four sports psychologists in the world. You remember that?



Kelly Hatfield:

Oh, yeah, that was so much fun. That was such a great day.



John Mitchell:

That was fun. That was fun. And so we we'd go and see him primarily because I was automation. On behalf of the University of Texas and the athletic director. You know, my goal is to make the University Texas, the gold standard for mental training and conditioning and college sports. And so I wanted to go meet the top sports psychologists of the world, they just so happened that Michael Gervais was in Seattle, which is where Kelly is. And so we go and meeting in the course of meeting him, he talks about how, you know, he worked with each player in the Seahawks that were in the years that they were playing in the Super Bowl, and each player would have a a mission statement that was below approximately 50 words long, that they would read every day that would really drive them and that would give purpose to their their life. Kelly, are you on anything more to add to that damage? Anything?



Kelly Hatfield:

No, I think that pretty much covers it. Yeah.



John Mitchell:

And but you know, it's, I see the power of this too, to have something that is emotional, that really drives you in terms of your life. And, and I'll show you, I'll give you an example in my visualization, and it's edited the Spirituality Section. But here's what I say to myself. Here's my empowering purpose, that inspires me. The top book, the world on success is thinking Grow Rich, God chose me to reveal his full secret to the world. What I've created is life change. And only I can give this to the world. I teach people the practical way to create the exceptional life rather than the average life. And if I had learned at 20, what I learned at 50, what a difference it would have made. I'm giving people a true advantage in life, changing the world, one person and one class at a time. Getting gratification internally, from seeing the specific lies I'm dramatically impacting. Plus, I'm self actualizing to a level beyond what I've ever experienced before. Well, you know, when when I read that to myself every day, I tell you, I can't wait to get out of bed. I mean, I am I have charged up. And I'm sort of curious, well, what is the essence of your powerful mission statement?



Kelly Hatfield:

Mine is really about inspiring others, so striving every day to get a little bit better and helping others do the same and realize their potential. So that really is where I think, to the point that you're making, too when it comes to the spiritual part of your life. It really is about that kind of purpose. You know what I mean? And being super connected to that on a daily basis, because that's like your north star and reminding yourself of that every day because, you know, one of what are some of the ways that I can do that. Well goes back to what we talked about a little prior episode. It's one of my values, you know, which is to be present. And you can't inspire others unless you are, you know, present and have actually excellent communication skills. So like, you can see all of the kind of tie ins that help hold up that mission statement, purpose statement, you know, whatever it is that, John, what do you call that?



John Mitchell:

The mission statement or inspiring purpose?



Kelly Hatfield:

Inspiring purpose? Yeah. So I think that's the really critical, you know, piece of this related to spirituality is just helping you get super connected to your purpose on a everyday basis. And you're not just looking at that, you know, like, we joke about once a year, you know what I mean?



John Mitchell:

Right, right. Well, and, you know, I'd say it really puts in perspective how most people do life, how they're just winging life, you know, they don't, they don't have anything that's pulling them forward and in to their desired life. And, and the effect of that is a recreate their, their past. And, you know, the Kool Aid, you having something that pulls your life forward to your desired life really starts by with having that empowering purpose where, you know, you read it, and you feel uplifted. And, and, you know, I see in teaching this, oftentimes, it takes a little bit of tweaking, you know, what somebody will put initially will get them going, and oftentimes My comment is, is make it more emotional, you know, because it's typically not emotional, but you just keep on tweaking it. And, you know, this mission statement I have, you know, it took me a little while to get it, but it ain't changed in, in years, really. But it's powerful. And, you know, the other thing about the spiritual side of our methodology is, you know, some of it is, is talking about concepts, spirit, maybe spiritual concepts, as an example, one of the things I articulate to myself every day, to keep me from being frustrated with people, is that everybody is a product of their genetics, coupled with what has come into their consciousness to this point in their life. And, you know, this is a concept that, that I started getting out two or three years ago, and, you know, because I would be frustrated that people who didn't see the world, like I saw it in particular, wouldn't see the the power of of think it, be it. But once I got that, from reading it every day, I'm like, Well, of course, they doubt you know, they, they have different genetics, they have different life experiences, of course, they don't see the world like I do. I'm sort of curious, do you have anything in your visualization to help you deal with the frustration of people?



Kelly Hatfield:

As far as the frustration of people is concerned?



John Mitchell:

I guess you're never frustrated with them, right?



Kelly Hatfield:

No, no, I think for me, one of my key kind of words, and values is empathy. And so and that seek first to understand, and so that is part of my visualization. And so I'm always trying to, you know, I'm trying to understand where somebody's coming from. So that, that helps mitigate some of maybe the frustration I have, or understanding around their context, or what is making them think the way they're thinking or, you know, so that helps me become more patient, when I'm seeking first to understand because I'm more empathetic, and, and then again, just have more context to know, because that's part of influence as well. You know, if I, if I have a clearer understanding around what kind of makes you tick, and a clear understanding of maybe why you're thinking the way you think about something, then that helps me, you know, as just as far as influence is concerned, and so, and just being more patient with someone and meeting it and the ability to meet somebody where they're at, right, in what kind of know where they're coming from, that's really hard to do. And so, that's some of the language where that's in my visualization is around empathy, and it's around, Seek first to understand



John Mitchell:

Yeah, and you know, we're for people that don't know, seeking first to understand before trying to be understood is one of the seven habits of highly effective people which is legendary book by Stephen Covey. But and, you know, I see that in our template, two things are really going on what one thing is, is that we're articulating the right actions that we want to take, but but we're also giving our lives perspective and regards to you know, different things. It's like one of the things in the spiritual part of of My visualisation is what a incredibly blessed, wonderful life. I have. And, and, you know, I succinctly explain why I should be, I feel I should feel so, so blessed? Well, you know, that's powerful, because it it sets my tone, you know, I just see how powerful it is to have this feeling that the succinct articulation of your desired life or self each day, it completely changes the dynamics of how I operate, and the people that do our methodology outright versus people that, you know, the 98% of people who are just waking life. And, I mean, it's, it's so powerful. And, you know, I tell you something else, I think I've told you this, but he, I'm such a big believer in personal growth. And one of the things I have always struggled with is how to how to really make a difference in the world, with my estate, not not just our methodology, but with my estate. And I've always been challenged with that, you know, back when, when I was in the reverse mortgage business, I started a foundation for single moms and would put them through college, typically Junior College and give them a scale. And, you know, I was proud of that. And it was cool, but but it was pretty unleveraged because it took like about $90,000 per mom to get them through. And and so I've been you know, over the years I've been struggling with when I die, how do I make a difference in the world. And of course, I want to take care of the ginge but with the kid because of course with changes lifestyle, you know, surely that money quick. He probably a couple of weeks at cron, gone, but nevertheless, you know, I want to make a difference in the world. And I see that a lot of people that are blessed to have money struggle with this. And as an example, one of my closest friends is Bill Cunningham. And he's the former Chancellor and President at the University of Texas and, and Bill's probably worth 70 $80 million dollars. And we talk about this a lot. And he's gonna give, you know, $40 million to the University of Texas. And I'm like, Okay, Bill, I get that. But I'm like, you know, that, to me, that feels like throwing, you know, water in the ocean, you know. And again, if that works for him, great. But I don't want to do that. And I just had another friend that I taught Thank you be it to a guy that owns a private equity company in Dallas, he just made a $40 million dollar donation to University of Texas recently. And they named the Engineering Department at reamp compute. And so the point of all this is that I have struggled to figure out how to make my mark with the cap lab. And over the last year or two, though, I decided that I'm going to set up a, it's not well, it's already set up a foundation in my will, that for my grandkids, I got three grandkids now, and I am allocating a few million dollars to to provide personal growth for each of those three grandkids. When they become adults, once they turn the age of 23. For the next 50 years. For each one of them. I'm allocating $10,000 in today's dollars for them to do something in the area of personal growth. Because one of the things I see today is that the average person after they graduate from college, doesn't read three books the rest of their life. And that's normal in in the world today. And I see and I know you're a total believer in this, how important it is to have ongoing personal growth is strategic relative to what you want to accomplish. And so, I'm setting up this for my grandkids and I read it every day that I'm assuring their future success by giving them the gift of personal growth when they get older. And so, you know, again, that's one of those things that I read that every day and it has such an impact. It just powerful.



Kelly Hatfield:

I absolutely love that. That is such a great idea, too. That's amazing. I love that



John Mitchell:

I had well and you know, it's it you i And I'm proud that I have come up with it, but I still you know I mean, that is good. But I still haven't found the the the bigger picture to what I want to do. I don't know, eight, it could be somehow funding think it be it because I think that's my true gift to the world. I don't know, you know, I'm in as I know you are, I'm in to helping people that will help themselves. And I don't have any interest in helping people that won't help themselves. I'm glad there are people that will help those people, but it's not going to be me. But I don't know, it's I, I'm always amazed today with the friends of mine I have that are, you know, that that are blessed with great wealth? You know, what oftentimes happen is they never figure it out. And they end up leaving it to the kids. Yeah, basically, then the kids got to figure out how to do it, you know, and then they then they never figure it out. And then it goes, you know, it's it's this never ending cycle. But wait, anything else you want to say about the spiritual side of things could be it?



Kelly Hatfield:

No, I mean, other than just piggybacking off what you, you know, what we've already talked about, which is that purpose, I think another part of spirituality is that giving back component, you know, that, that, that feeds your soul, you know, when you're doing things for other people, and you know, whether it's part of a financial, you know, and if that isn't part of your equation, but that you're, you know, you're volunteering, you're being of service in some way, shape, or form, again, feeds your soul. And I think that, you know, there's a lot that is connected to that related to abundance, you know, reading that abundance kind of mindset, and when you're giving, you know, what happens as a result of that spiritually, and then oftentimes, to it translates to other areas of your life. But, you know, I think, you know, making sure that you have that component in that spirituality of section of your visualization is so important. It really is a key component of your spirituality is in your how you're going to give and contribute.



John Mitchell:

Right? You know, I think I think you said it well, you know, it's at the end of the day, it's impacting others in favor of wife if you if you get up every day, sort of with that as your focus, boy, good things are gonna happen, right? Yeah, absolutely. Yeah. Okay, well, until next time, we will see you.
