Kindra Riber and Mick Smith talk divorce, custody and family trauma today on The Aftermath Podcast.
Answered audience questions:
Although divorced, people can change and improve their behavior.
As defined, Parental Alienation Syndrome ( PAS) entails an intentional process directed against the other parent.
The medical community has been against defining PAS as a syndrome.
Some experts though are advocating PAS in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM).
Since the custody process is broken the alienated parent should document, with others, and use tangible evidence for change.
The targeted parent may be ordered more time by the Court.
The dysfunctional parent can manipulate the Court to alienate the other parent.
Four basic child behaviors to be aware of: first, mental health, depression, and anxiety; second, behavioral issues, impulsive, delinquent; third, academic, risk-taking behavior, use of chemicals, drugs, alcohol, and early sexual activity.
As adults, if issues are unresolved, the same problems will crop back up.
The stable, disciplining parent may lose out early on but long-term the child often returns to the alienated parent.
The alienated parent should communicate as able. Be reassuring and loving.
The best way to re-engage is to be authentic, and share your perspective and emotions; you are a part of this process.
Seek an empathetic support network because people often do not understand what you are experiencing nor do they know how to help.
