Jack Levine believes that the top public safety issue should be drug addiction and how society deals with it. He suggests that putting counselors in schools, even middle schools, would be a proactive way to address this issue. By having students meet with a counselor every two weeks, they can learn why they may be turning to drugs and how to cope with their issues. Jack believes that for most people, drug addiction stems from childhood trauma, low self-esteem, and feelings of worthlessness. He emphasizes the importance of understanding why you turned to drugs in the first place in order to overcome addiction successfully. Jack also mentions that some people may require more therapy than just learning why they turned to drugs, particularly those who have experienced physical or emotional trauma.
