004 #TakeThatForData with Brian Faith - NFL Viewership - Up or down?

Brian talks about the return of the NFL, comparing multiple datasets, confirmation bias and the dangers of analysis paralysis.

One of the dangers of over analysis is that it can compromise the perception of data and calls the validity into question.

Brian talks about the FOX Game of the Week, primetime football, was up 7% over last season's game in the same slot, in terms of viewership. Almost 26 million viewers tuned in to see Tom Brady and Drew Brees square off against one another in the Tampa Bay Buccaneers matchup against NFC South Rival, the New Orleans Saints.

It was also the most watched regular season NFL game.

Looking at too many data points, that are too close together, can muddle interpretation.

On the flipside, the ABC primetime matchup of Cowboys vs Rams was down dramatically compared to the same game last year. Down 15%!

CBS saw a dip of 12% for regional matchups.

So while the NFL outperformed the rest of television, it was down compared to last year.

Are Americans just watching less TV? Are they watching less football?

Compare apples to apples and don't overanalyze!
