Yes, Alex Haley was sued for plagiarism in 1978 after author Harold Courlander claimed that Roots contained passages from Courlander's 1967 novel, The African. Haley agreed to pay Courlander $650,000 (2 million dollars in today's terms) as part of an out of court settlement.
