Direct Primary Care Explained

Direct Primary Care Explained

This episode is focused on the topic of Direct Primary Care, also known as "DPC".

The DPC model turns Primary Care into a Membership Model, rather than what is known as "Fee for Service". The idea is to provide all of the same routine services a person can get from their Primary Care Physician, but eliminate the incentive to churn patients through as fast as possible, many times diluting the quality of care provided.

Patients often get more time with their doctor and develop a stronger relationship, and even the Physician benefits from a higher quality of life. It also eliminates the need for claims to be filed to insurance, which delays payment and can often inflate the cost of services delivered.

Early in Andy's career, he focused on business process outsourcing, working with some of the largest companies in America, and helping them improve their backroom processes.

Out of college, he joined Xerox, considered one of the best companies to work for in order to get a "Master's in Sales" because of their very intense training and educational programs.

Andy actually was able to make "President's Club" 11 years in a row at Xerox, an incredible achievement.

Andy helped develop the concept of "Near-Site/On-Site" where they offered a hybrid model of back-office solutions for businesses, but did real-time printing on-location at the company's office, and did the heavy lifting operations nearby at Kinko's brick-and-mortar location. This business grew to over $60M in revenue in 2 years!

Ultimately, his journey toward Healthcare2U started with a long-term misdiagnosis of oral cancer. It began during an extended period of travel for his work career, where he developed a canker sore on his tongue that would occasionally lead him to see care at an Urgent Care facility in whichever city he was currently in for work travel.

This experience lasted over 9 months, and he continued to receive different diagnoses from the doctors and dentists he saw, but ultimately a visit with an oral surgeon was the one who recognized that his sore was cancerous. This resulted in Andy having about 1/3 of his tongue removed, and led to treatment at MD Anderson where there was further dissection and removal of lymph nodes in his neck.

This experience ultimately propelled him into the world of Healthcare, where he realized he could replicate the "near-site/on-site" model he created for printing services, and apply it to primary care.
