Why is the gift of tongues so controversial? Should the gift of tongues be operating in the modern church?  Why does this gift cause so much division between denominations? Dr. Ray Self discusses these questions with clear biblical teaching and practical applications. Sadly the gift of tongues has caused more division than any other spiritual gift in the body of Christ.

Dr. Ray: Hello, welcome to Self Talk. I'm your host, Dr. Ray Self. So glad you joined me. I'm gonna have a really good show, a very interesting show. Going get into the controversial topic of tongues… duh, duh, dum, dum. Again, this show is brought to you by Dr. Jess Youngblood, Premier Family Care. He is, has offices in Bluntsville, Alabama, Arab, Alabama, uh, and uh, where's… oh yeah, Guntersville, Alabama, so be sure and see him. He's a Holy Spirit-filled doctor. If you're in the North Alabama area, amazing guy. Also, the show is sponsored by the International College of Ministry, Holy Spirit-filled accredited seminary. You can work online on your own schedule any time. This is a college that I founded over about 22, 23 years ago. Check it out icmcollege.org. So I want to talk to you about tongues, I mean, you mention tongues, it immediately becomes controversial. Now honestly, the controversy always, always, always seems to reside or happen between what I call mainline traditional denominations such as the Southern Baptist or the Presbyterian or the Methodists, the Lutheran versus the Pentecostal and the Charismatics and some of the Independents, and that's where the controversy arises. And it's interesting, of all the spiritual gifts that's mentioned in First Corinthians 12, tongue seems to be the one that, that just lights the fuse. I've– it's uh, it's always the one that lights the fuse that people want to talk about. And I've had, even people come up to me before, “You're not one of those people that speaks in tongues are you? Oh, of course not.” “Actually, I do speak in tongues.” I'll tell you right now, I do, I do have the gift of tongues and I'm not going to lie to you about it. It's a powerful gift and I'm going– but I am going to talk to you about it.

I will tell you a funny story. Um, and I was raised Southern Baptist and I, and I love the Southern Baptist denomination, uh, Southern Baptist people. This– when it comes to the gift of salvation, the Southern Baptists do the best job ever. They’re, they're amazing, but the Southern Baptists are Cessationists, which, they believe the gift of tongues and prophecy has all passed away. As far as the baptism of the Holy Spirit, they believe that you get all of the Holy Spirit the moment that you're saved. Of course, the other viewpoint which we'll be talking about, the Pentecostal viewpoint or Charismatic viewpoint is, is very different. So one day, I was sitting at a Cracker Barrel with a new friend of mine and she was Southern Baptist– well, I think she was another conservative Baptist, I forgot. But we're getting ready to, to eat and she literally looked at me and she said “Now, you're not one of those people that speaks in tongues are you?” And I said, “Well, you know…” she said, “Well, tell you what, here comes our food. Can you bless the food?” So I bless the food in tongues. I don't know, I just can't help myself sometimes. But why is it so controversial? The bible has a lot to say about tongues. I believe there's about 23 verses in the New Testament talking about tongues, commanding us to do tongues. Um, in verse 39 of First Corinthians, I think it’s chapter 12. It says “Do not forbid speaking in tongues but covet to prophesy.”

So we have a lot about tongues. To me, tongues is a spiritual language. It is my spirit praying. The bible talks in Corinthians that tells us that he who speaks in a tongue edifies himself, he who prophesies edifies the church. So when I speak in a tongue, I edify myself, I build myself up. The bible s– in Romans, it says “We do–” “we know not how we should pray so the Spirit prays for us.” So it's my spirit communing or talking to God and it's very powerful. Some of the controversy comes, I think, when people you know shout out in tongues, and yelling in tongues and all that during church services and I'm going to talk about that in part two. But now I got to get honest here. I just watched a debate uh, just a couple days ago between two ministers debating on YouTube, you know, about tongues. And one said “Well, this– you don't have the Holy Spirit because you don't speak in tongues.” And obviously, that pastor was offended saying “You– I don't have the Holy Spirit because I don't speak in tongues?”

So this could be a long theological dissertation, I don't want it to become that. The basic bottom line here is this– I want you to hear me closely. Now, I was raised in a traditional Baptist church. Again, love the Baptists, I'm not criticizing the Baptists. I do believe the Baptists are in error in part of their doctrine. You know, a part of their doctrine – not all their doctrine – but a part of their doctrine; and that's the doctrine– There's two things that I, that I differ with them on. One is that the moment you're saved, you're completely filled with the Holy Spirit and two is that the gifts of the Spirit have passed away and that was for New Testament times or until the scripture was canonized. Or it was the gifts of the Holy Spirit like prophecy, faith, miracles, discerning of spirits, words of knowledge, words of wisdom, that was to confirm. It was something for the early church. Now that the perfect has come, that has all passed away and that comes from First Corinthians chapter 13. However, that is taking scripture out of context and there's where the problem has become. In my opinion, throughout history one of the biggest problems with the church is taking scriptures out of context and not reading as Paul Harvey would say, the rest of the story.

So I do speak in tongues but here, here is– I think the bottom line problem. I'm kind of a bottom-line guy. Let's make it clear. The bottom line is the baptism of the Holy Spirit. This is the big issue here. With me, you know, I was never taught about tongues. Um, as a matter of fact– well, I wasn't taught about it. I did have a- an adult Sunday school teacher tell me once that tongues was of the devil. Well, this is the kind of way I was raised. Usually in, in my church we never spoke against gifts of the Spirit or baptism of the Holy Spirit or tongues. We just never talked about it. That's the way I was raised. But the baptism of the Holy Spirit is real. It is very real. The bible is very clear about the baptism of the Holy Spirit. This is the way I interpret the bible. And not only is it the way I interpret the bible, this is what I have lived and experienced. I was saved, I had clear salvation. Life-changing experience. When I was 10 years old, 10 years old, I was saved in a big large Baptist church and my fath– my father was saved on the same day. And I'm going to tell you my age now, this will show you my age. This was on Easter Sunday. It had been in 1961, I was born in 1951. Easter Sunday, 1961, my father and I went down to the altar and received Jesus Christ as our savior. That evening, I was baptized. The next day, I remember literally walking out in the backyard of my home in Memphis, Tennessee and everything was different. I changed. Something was different. Literally, it was like the grass was greener, the sky was bluer, everything was more clear. I felt different. I knew I was seeing things different and I knew I had become a different person. I was saved, folks. I accepted Jesus Christ as my savior and I was genuinely saved.

Now, and that took a work of the Holy Spirit because I was regenerated at that point. I became a new creation. That's a powerful work of the Holy Spirit. But the bible talks about something else. Jesus told us in Acts, the book of Acts, chapter 1, “you shall receive power when the Holy Ghost”-- the Holy Spirit, “has come upon you. And you shall be My witness.” And then He makes it you know, very evidently clear. I mean, I love how Jesus always made things just perfectly clear. So I want to look up this one scripture for you. In Acts 1:5, Jesus said, “John baptized with water but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.” And then He said, “You shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you.” Now we know with the day of Pentecost the famous verses in Acts where the Holy Spirit fell like tongues of fire on the 120 and they began to speak in tongues, okay? And so what some believe is that well, that's when the Holy Spirit came to earth and we've had the Holy Spirit ever since but that was it. You know, Pentecost was it so whenever you get saved, you're filled with the Holy Spirit. But that's not what we see in the book of Acts.

And one of the scriptures that really changed my life when it was shown to me was Acts chapter 8. And Acts chapter 8 is just an amazing story. It's about Philip the Evangelist. In Acts, chapter 8 is his story. It's an incredible story and it says in Acts 8 “Therefore,” verse 4, “Therefore those who have been scattered went about preaching the word.” Now there was a persecution in the church and the Christians got scattered. “Philip went down to the city of Samaria,” reading from Acts chapter 8, verse 5, “and began proclaiming Christ to them.” So Philip the Evangelist went to Samaria and began proclaiming Jesus, that's what evangelists do. He was like a Billy Graham of the day. “And the crowds were…” “were in one accord giving attention to what was said by Philip, as they saw the signs which he was performing.” Um, Acts, verse 7, 8:7, “For in many cases many who had unclean spirits, they were coming out of them, shouting with a loud voice; and many that had been paralyzed and lame were healed. There was much rejoicing in that city.”

So Peter was– I mean, excuse me. Philip was preaching. He was evangelizing and signs and wonders were taking place. Now in verse 9, “There was a man named Simon who formerly was practicing magic in the city astonishing the people of Samaria, claiming to be someone great, and they were all, from the smallest to the greatest, were giving attention to him, saying, ‘This man–’” “‘this man is what is called great power of God.’ And they were giving attention because he had for a long time astonished them with this magic art.” So, so Simon was a magician or a witch or warlock or something like that and he'd astonish people. Verse 12, “But when they believed Philip preaching the good news about the kingdom of God in the name of Jesus Christ, they were being baptized, men and women alike.” Now this is the key scripture. Philip was evangelizing and there was a sorcerer there and he was actually getting, trying to get converted too. Um, but Philip was evangelizing and then it says in the name of Jesus Christ the people were getting baptized. Men and women were being baptized. That sounds like salvation. And it says “For even Simon himself believed; and after being baptized he continued on with Philip, as he observed the signs and great miracles taking place, he was constantly amazed.” So we have Philip evangelizing and the people believed. “They believed Philip and the good news about the kingdom of God in the name of Jesus Christ, and…” so, “...and were baptized.” These people were saved.

This is what I want you to understand. Philip went to Samaria and evangelized and people were being saved. Even, even a former witch or warlock - whatever he was - which is to me is not that important. But you know, it is in the scripture. Acts 8:14 changed my life. Acts 8:14 changed my life. “When the apostles in Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent them Peter and John…” Now, verse 15, “who came down and prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit. For He had not yet fallen upon them - for they had simply been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ - and they began laying hands on them and they were receiving…” uh, “...and they were receiving the Holy Spirit.” So you have Peter– Phillip evangelizing, people getting saved. And sometime later, the apostles go up, lay hands on them that they might be filled with the Holy Spirit. Well, this is after Pentecost. So you had salvation which was a work of the Holy Spirit and then, but you had an empowerment. “You shall receive power.” So now they were baptized in the Holy Spirit. So you had the Pentecost but then you have Acts 8.

Then you go to another, you know, really evident story of Paul in Ephesus. Acts 19:1 “It happened, while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul passed through the upper country and came to Ephesus. And he found some disciples and he said to them, ‘Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?’” This is Ray Self. I had– I had believed in Jesus. I was saved but I had not been filled with the Holy Spirit. “And they said to him, ‘No, we haven't even heard whether there is a Holy Spirit.’ And he said, ‘What…’” how were you baptized? “‘Into what then were you baptized?’ They said, “Into John's baptism.’” John was preaching Jesus. “Paul said, ‘John baptized with the baptism of repentance, telling the people to believe in Him who was coming after him, that is, Jesus.’ When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of Lord Jesus. And Paul laid his hands on them and the Holy Spirit came on them and they began speaking with tongues and prophesying.”

So here we have again, believers who had believed, you know, had received Christ and then got baptized in the Holy Spirit. Two things happened. Now sometimes, apparently this happened maybe in a matter of days; but you see things that happen at separate times. Well, then you have Acts 10 where the people were listening to Peter preach and the Holy Spirit fell upon them. But the one that got to me was: I know that I was saved but in 1986, someone laid hands on me, a man named John, I've told you about this in some previous podcasts. And when John laid his hands on me, I had a life-changing experience that changed my life. The Holy Spirit came upon me. The Holy Spirit came upon Ray Self and I cannot deny this. I will not deny this. It happened to me and don't you dare say “Well, you weren't saved before.” This happened. I was saved. The Holy Spirit fell upon me. I felt a power, a sense of love, a sense of peace I've never felt before in my life, and everything changed. And everything changed. And you’ll say, “Well, did you start speaking in tongues?” Nope. I did not start speaking in tongues, not right then. And so, they asked me - the man who prayed for me - “Do you feel any funny language in your mouth?” I said, “No, I don't feel any funny language.” I'm driving home and I did begin to speak in tongues.

Now, there's another argument that says um, you have to speak in tongues to be– if you, if you are filled with the Spirit or baptized with the Holy Spirit– now that… generally those terms are interchangeable, being filled with the Spirit, being baptized with the Spirit are interchangeable. Some teach that if you're not speaking in tongues you probably, or you have not been baptized with the Holy Spirit. I think the scripture doesn't fully support that because you see in Acts 8, it says they're filled with the Holy Spirit and it doesn't say what happened to them after that. In Acts 19, it says they begin to speak in tongues and prophesy. So, and of course, you have Pentecost, they spoke in tongues. So some people believe that tongues is the initial sign of it. I think yeah, it's, I think it's the most common sign of the Holy Spirit but I believe the manifestation gifts and the fruit of the Spirit are the signs. Manifestation gifts mentioned in First Corinthians 12. This means to give– the word manifest means to give evidence of the Holy Spirit. So evidence of the Holy Spirit, according to First Corinthians chapter 12 are words of knowledge, words of wisdom, prophecy, faith, healing, miracles, discerning of spirits, tongues, and interpretation of tongues. Now that is the manifestation of the Holy Spirit. Then you have the fruit of the Spirit which you know, love, patience, long-suffering, that's all mentioned in Galatians.

So yeah, I mean, there's going to be evidence and I don't want to get legalistic - you have to speak in tongues, if you don't speak in tongues then you're not baptized with the Holy Spirit. I don't– I can't go that far. They could be correct, I'm not going to um, beat somebody over the head with that. Now my wife was baptized with the Holy Spirit. She had a life-changing experience with the Holy Spirit in the living room of her house and she spoke in tongues many years later, okay? And some people, “Well, she must have had the gift, didn't use it.”

But the point of this podcast is, it seems like people who have not been baptized with the Holy Spirit will always single out the tongues. They make an issue of tongues and the bible tells us, Paul said “I wish all of you spoke in tongues.” He says “Do not forbid speaking in tongues.” But now, he did say in church it is better to prophesy and edify the church than speaking in a tongue. He says because when you speak in a tongue, you edify yourself. When you speak in a tongue, you're praying to God in a language that nobody can understand and you are being edified. But nobody knows what you're saying unless there's an interpreter. And he explains this very clearly in Corinthians 12 and 14. So– I believe that's correct. 12– we’ll just say 12, 13 and 14. He talks about this and it's, it's, he's talking about tongues being done in order. But then some people make this into uh, a rule, “Well, there can't be any more tongues today because there's no interpretation.” Well, yeah… you know this, that's to me is a pretty uh– Wait that's actually um… uh– it's actually First Corinthians 14. When he talks about speaking in tongues with an interpreter, what Paul is trying to tell us is… he's just making a common sense argument. He's saying um, the one who speaks in a tongue - this is First Corinthians 14:2,  “The one who speaks in the tongue does not speak to men but to God, no one understands but,” but, “in his spirit he speaks mysteries. But the one who prophesies speaks to men for edification, exhortation and consolation. The one who speaks in tongues edifies himself, the one who prophesies edifies the church.” 14:5, “I wish all of you spoke in tongues, but even more that you would prophesy…” How clear is that? Okay? “...and greater is the person who prophesies.”

Now he's talking about the church. Better than the one who speaks in tongues unless there's an interpreter. So what he's saying is, if you're in the middle of church and you're going [Dr. Ray speaks in tongues], whatever you're saying, it's just a bunch of noise unless there's an interpreter. But if somebody prophesies, “I hear the Lord saying today,” “This is what the Lord God says to us today,” that's much more edifying. But he said don't stop speaking in tongues. But tongues is a personal gift. It's for you. It's between you and God, okay? It's between you and God. And it doesn't edify anybody but you unless somebody can interpret what you're saying. That's all Paul's trying to say and people make it too complicated. And– but here comes the legalistic folks. The religious spirit goes, “Well, since uh, there's no interpreters today–” I have to admit interpretation of tongues is rare– “since there's no interpreters today, that's why we don't have any tongues.”

Then there is the huge argument, First Corinthians 13. Here's your controversy, here is your controversy, First Corinthians 13. You know, the love chapter that they, they read at every wedding. “Love is patient, love is kind, and it's not jealous; love does not brag, and it's not arrogant; does not act unbecomingly, does not seek its own, it's not provoked, does not take into account wrong suffered; does not rejoice in unrighteousness but rejoices with the truth; love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never fails.” Hear me now, drum roll, please. “But if they're gifts of prophecy, they'll be done away with. If there are tongues, they will cease. Oh, here you go! If there are tongues they will cease! See, I knew there's no more tongues, these people are just speaking a bunch of gibberish. Tongues is not a gift today.” That is literally what so many traditional people believe. Now, the difference is when you receive the baptism of the Holy Spirit, you literally have a revelation of scripture. I'm not trying to offend anybody, that nobody else has… When I was baptized with the Holy Spirit, scripture became alive to me. I understood what the bible was trying to say. I'm not saying everybody else misinterprets it but there's just– it's like the author of the bible just starts to speak more and more and more to you. Now, but if you have not been baptized with the Holy Spirit, what people tend to do is try to get the bible to agree with their lack of experience. If you haven't experienced it, “let me find scriptures out of context to justify my unbelief,” and that's called eisegesis interpretation of scripture. Exegesis interpretation of scripture is letting the bible speak for itself. Eisegesis says “I take my preconceptions and I'll put them into the word of God. Well, I don't think that tongues– I think that tongues is a bunch of gibberish and it's not for today and uh, all those crazy Pentecostals and Charismatics, this is just all demonic stuff. Let me show you why. Because it says here that tongues will cease in First Corinthians chapter 13, ‘If they are gifts of prophecy, they will cease; if they are tongues, they will cease.’ You see, they've ceased. They've ceased, we don't have them anymore. Why? Because chapter– verse 10, First Corinthians 13. ‘When the perfect comes, the partial will be done away with.’ You see, we have the perfect now. We have the perfect uh…” Well, what's the perfect? “Well, the perfect is the word of God. It's perfect, therefore we don't have any more tongues.”

But the perfect word of God says don't forbid speaking in tongues. “But we have the perfect so we have no more tongues.” But the perfect says don't forbid speaking in tongues; that's my argument. And so, “We have the perfect, therefore it's done away with,” which is totally illogical because they call the, the word of God perfect and the perfect word of God instructs us to speak in tongues. But if you read on, it says “When I was a child, I used to speak like a child, think like a child, reason like a child; then I became a man, I did away with childish things. For now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part, then I will be known fully as also I have been known.” So there's, there's talking about a growing up in a fullness– in a fullness. And I believe what that was referring to is what Paul is talking about when we go over to Ephesians– When it talks about “For now I see in a mirror, dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part, but then I'll become fully known just as I have been fully known,” What that's referring to in my opinion is Ephesians chapter four, when he talks about the fivefold ministry, apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors and teachers there “...for the equipping of the saints for the work of service, to the building up of the body of Christ, until we all attain the unity of faith and the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature man, to the measure of the stature which belongs to the fullness of Christ;” I believe that's talking about– become fully known is when we finally reach the fullness of Christ, complete maturity in the Lord. We are not there yet. We are not completely mature in Christ yet. I don't think that will happen until He comes back, okay?

So it's just a very loose interpretation. It's a convenient interpretation when you say that tongues have ceased because the perfect has come. It's very convenient to say that the bible is perfect, therefore they have ceased but it's a very poor argument because again, the perfect bible tells us to speak in tongues and do not forbid speaking in tongues. And then the chapter before, chapter 12 of Corinthians, First Corinthians chapter 12 talks about speaking in tongues. And then you have 13 which says it will be done away with but then you have 14 saying don't forbid speaking in tongues. So you have to read the whole thing in context. I just believe that what has happened is that many of my brothers and sisters in Christ are using the scripture to back up what tradition has taught them.

All I know is… you know, it's not all I know, but what I do know is when I got baptized with the Holy Spirit it was like, it was just so obvious to see that there is salvation and there is a filling of the Holy Spirit. There is salvation which is being born again and then there is a filling of the Spirit which is an empowerment to be a witness of Christ, which the bible talks about very clearly in acts. In Acts. “You shall receive power, and then you shall be My witness.” In Luke, the last chapter of Luke, He tells His disciples “Wait in the city [‘till] you’re clothed with power,” And His disciples - they had been with Jesus, they had faith in– they saw Him die. They literally were eyewitnesses. They saw Him die and, and, raised from the dead. You talk about believers, they're believers. They were believers. But then they got filled with the Spirit at Pentecost. But then, later on, the believers at Ephesus got filled. Then the believers that Peter was talking to got filled and then the believers of Samaria that Philip was preaching to got filled. And so you see it happening over and over. And then Jude talks about it.

So… there's for the controversy with tongues. In other words, a person who's not been baptized with the Holy Spirit will take scriptures out of context and will argue against the gift of tongues and sadly, it causes division. I believe every Christian should be baptized with the Holy Spirit. Yet can it happen at the moment of salvation? Absolutely it can. I know with me and thousands and perhaps millions of other Christians, it came later. Millions of other Christians have experienced the baptism of the Holy Spirit. And it's not people and– just being emotional, it's not their imagination. I know that I know that I know when I was baptized with the Holy Spirit, my life changed like nothing, like nothing I could ever, ever, ever imagine. It's just, it's just sad that there's a controversy over– it's very, very, very sad. And I… I grieve over it. I want everybody to be filled with the Spirit. I want everybody to be saved. And I think everybody according to scripture, Acts 2, Acts 10, Acts 8, Acts 19, Jude, let's all be filled with the Spirit and be united.

So yeah, there's a controversy about tongues. That's the one thing that seems to be divided over. And it's interesting because Paul said that prophecy was a much greater gift than tongues. He said “Pursue love, earnestly desire spiritual gifts especially to–” you, “to prophesy.” Covet to prophesy. Prophecy is a superior gift to tongues but for some reason, we don't divide over prophecy, we divide over tongues. It's kind of crazy. It is kind of crazy. And I hope this has made sense. I'm not trying to be a um– make a huge theological dissertation here. You know, A am a theologian but I'm just trying to talk to you as a guy, as a brother in Christ disusing common sense logic. I hope this show has been a blessing to you. Please don't forget to subscribe, download, rate us, all that good stuff. Uh, you can do this on, on Apple podcast, uh, Libsyn, some different places.
