So starting things off, congratulations, you are thinking about running for local office good. And guess what you're not alone. The days are these days, more and more people are considering getting involved in politics. And guess what, that's a good thing. And in running for local office, you can make a difference right where you live, you'll have a chance to serve your community and make it a better place. And that's something everyone should be able to get excited about. But like many local candidates, you may be wondering, Where do I even start? What do I need to know? And how can I be sure that my campaign is on the right track? Let's be real, this isn't your world. But it's your world. Now, you should know that. And you've got to make sure that you're ready for the challenge ahead. Traditional political consultants charging 1000s of dollars for their services, but you don't need to spend that much. And let's be real, you can't afford to. That's why I put together this handy guide on how to run for local office from start to finish includes everything you need in order to start off with a candidate through fundraising and campaign strategy all the way up to election day itself. It's a long and winding road. But it's one that you can make if you are willing to put in the work. And I'm here to help. Well, so for over 15 years, what have I done, I've helped candidates from all walks of life run for local office, from school boards, city councils, all the way up to mayors and all races in between. I've helped candidates get elected in every corner of the country. And now I'm here to help you to I want to help you win your local race. And the first step is to be sure you have a firm understanding of what running for office really means in the first place. Because it's not just about waking somebody up and asking, Hey, will you vote for me, but it's about being prepared with a plan that will help you get elected from start to finish. So are you ready to win? Let's get started. Chapter Two getting started. The first step in running for local office is deciding Yeah, you actually want to run now I know. I know. This sounds like a silly question. But let me explain. See, I've worked with many candidates who decide to run because they were mad at their current government or they want their voices heard. But they had no idea how to actually get started. They didn't really know where to start and ended up quitting just a few months after exploring the very idea of running. Your first step is to ask yourself why you want to run in what your goals are for the race. And if you have no answer, then it's probably not a good time for you to run. You need to know what motivates you and what drives your passion for public service before jumping into a campaign. Back in 2020. I was consulting with a lady who was considering running for city council, but she told me that she was also considering running for mayor and she didn't know what she wanted to run for. But she was kind of waffling between the two because of her lack of government experience. I asked her why she wanted to run for mayor and she said Well, it was because it was the position that paid more than the city council seat did. Needless to say, I advised her to reconsider her reasonings for running and it was a good It asked her if it was a good idea and fit within her goals. Number two, identifying the office you're seeking. Once you decide to run for office, the next step is to figure out which is which office it is you actually want to run for. It's important that you know which offices are available in your area and what qualifications they require. You may also want to check in with your local party to see what office offices are open. If you're not sure which office to run for, it may be helpful to talk some folks who have run for local office before, it can give you some insight into what the offices are available and what takes what it takes to win for those offices. It also doesn't hurt to talk to folks who have lost similar elections as they can give you some insights into what went wrong. And so you can avoid in repeating those mistakes should also contact the people who currently hold that office as they can give you some insight into the job and how it currently is a good fit for your skills. Developing a campaign a campaign plan. Once you decide to which office it is that you want to run for, it's time to develop your campaign plan. This should include things like a platform, campaign message, Target, Target Audience, fundraising goals, and a campaign strategy to help you win. You should also research your competition to see how they're messaging. And a good place to start is by reading other campaign plans and websites. This will give you some insight into where you can differentiate and have more effective messaging than your competition when reaching your target market. Now a good place to start with identifying your target market or niche is by identifying the issues that are relevant to your constituency. You should also consider what issues are trending in your district and how voters will be looking for a kid who can address these issues. In other words, it's important to understand that people what people care about, so you can identify potential constituents who would support you and then reach out to them. For example, back in 2016 70%, of Republican primary voters said that immigration was their top priority. So if you were running for office, in an area where immigration was a hot button issue, it was wise to focus on immigration issues and to talk about where they would address it. Donald Trump took that a step further in differentiating himself with other GOP candidates, even those who generally agreed on most policies. And he was able to do this by focusing on his hardline stance on immigration, which resonated with Republican primary voters in 2016, and helped propel him to win the nomination. Fundraising also finds itself at the top of lists of in terms of importance. Now we're going to dig more into the importance of detail and fundraising in the next chapter, which you'll have to download to check out later, folks. But if you're running for office, one of the most, rather, one of the biggest challenges is yes, raising money, you need funds to get your name out there and to compete with other candidates for votes. However, while fundraising can be a difficult task for any candidate, this is especially true for you local candidates. Here's the reality, you're not as well known. And you don't have the same connections to wealthy donors that other candidates do. You may be even competing against incumbents who have built up a fundraising network over the years, but there is hope, you can still raise money for your campaign, even if you don't have a huge network of donors or tons of cash to throw around. And the best way to do this is by simply asking donations from your supporters. And once you get these donations, what are you going to do with them? Having a structured campaign outreach strategy to use those donations effectively and efficiently is key to your campaign success. Some successful campaign outreach strategies could look like developing a plan on how to reach out and engage with voters, including through door to door campaigning, phone banking, and utilizing social media and other forms of media, which we will go over in chapter five.
