00:00:00.541 --> 00:00:01.483
What's up my good people?
00:00:01.483 --> 00:00:03.971
Welcome to the CJ Money Week show.
00:00:03.971 --> 00:00:05.902
Welcome to the show.
00:00:05.902 --> 00:00:14.955
Entrepreneur, author, singer, songwriter, fashion designer and creator and host of the TV show.
00:00:14.955 --> 00:00:16.745
That's why I'm here.
00:00:16.745 --> 00:00:17.829
What's up, jamie?
00:00:18.699 --> 00:00:18.940
Man.
00:00:18.940 --> 00:00:19.722
What's up, corey?
00:00:19.722 --> 00:00:19.882
Man?
00:00:19.882 --> 00:00:23.071
I'm glad to be on your platform, man, I really appreciate this man.
00:00:23.620 --> 00:00:27.640
Man, no man, I appreciate this man, I appreciate you man, I appreciate you.
00:00:27.640 --> 00:00:32.207
Jamie man, tell us a little about yourself and a little bit about your background.
00:00:33.509 --> 00:00:35.828
You said almost the whole story about me.
00:00:35.828 --> 00:00:40.743
Only thing you didn't add in there is that I have two children, a son and a daughter.
00:00:40.743 --> 00:00:49.723
Of course I'm from Gary, indiana, a native of Gary Indiana, talk show host, song writer, uh author of a book.
00:00:49.723 --> 00:00:52.969
That's why I'm uh live your most amazing life.
00:00:52.969 --> 00:00:57.362
Um, of course you name, I'm a barber and entrepreneur.
00:00:57.442 --> 00:01:06.275
I mean, uh, trying to set it all, man hey, you doing your thing, man, and I'm kind of proud of you, man, proud of you, proud of you.
00:01:16.424 --> 00:01:19.379
So, jamie, being a 14 kid out of 11 children, how was your experience growing up?
00:01:19.379 --> 00:01:22.781
Man?
00:01:22.781 --> 00:01:25.659
I would say I probably had one of the greatest childhoods ever growing up.
00:01:25.659 --> 00:01:28.003
Actually, my mother and father together had 17 children.
00:01:28.003 --> 00:01:31.069
Uh, my mother and father had nine kids together.
00:01:31.069 --> 00:01:38.489
My mom had a son before she met my dad, and my dad had seven children by his first wife before he met my mom.
00:01:38.489 --> 00:01:43.027
So at one point in time, it was 17 kids in one house and it was incredible, man.
00:01:43.027 --> 00:01:44.569
It was so much fun.
00:01:44.569 --> 00:01:52.703
I I would say that I probably had like one of the greatest childhoods growing up and, as you can see too, I just came from the gym get my workout in two minutes.
00:01:52.722 --> 00:02:04.909
Hey, so, uh, can you share some of the challenges you faced while writing your book or before writing your book and creating?
00:02:04.929 --> 00:02:05.629
TV show.
00:02:05.629 --> 00:02:11.512
You know what, when I first started writing my book, I didn't know how to really start or where to start.
00:02:11.512 --> 00:02:18.751
All I know is I just needed to start and I had something in me that I wanted to talk about and I needed to start.
00:02:18.751 --> 00:02:22.610
And I was just so afraid to start.
00:02:22.610 --> 00:02:34.395
I don't know why, but I was just so afraid it was going to be the day, because you know, anytime when there's a challenge in your life, a lot of times you don't even get done because of the fear of even starting.
00:02:34.879 --> 00:02:36.486
So one day I just started.
00:02:36.486 --> 00:02:45.526
I just said, hey, let's start, and I just started writing and next thing, you know, one page turned to two pages, turned to three pages and I started to get broken.
00:02:45.526 --> 00:02:56.259
And even during the whole course of me writing I was scared the whole time, and I can't even lie to you and tell you where I got the confidence from.
00:02:56.259 --> 00:03:08.707
But as I started to really get into it and I started to talk to people about book writing people who had published many books and I had begun to understand the format, I began to gain my confidence.
00:03:09.500 --> 00:03:19.168
Yeah writing is all about confidence and even when I started my talk show you know, once again, even with the talk show, I didn't know what I was doing.
00:03:19.168 --> 00:03:28.407
It kind of like I feel like it's all a part, it was all a part of my purpose and destiny in life, because everything just happened for me.
00:03:28.407 --> 00:03:32.685
It don't always happen that way for people, but it happened for me.
00:03:32.685 --> 00:03:36.066
I'm grateful, I'm thankful and I always know I'm not to ever let it go to my head.
00:03:36.066 --> 00:03:37.423
I think that it's all about me.
00:03:39.288 --> 00:03:48.960
Yeah, man, I believe you too because just you know what.
00:03:48.960 --> 00:03:58.330
I believe you too because just you know what you're doing and taking the time out of coming on my show and being on my platform when you got your own platform, you know that speaks a lot, man, and listen you have a great platform yourself.
00:03:58.659 --> 00:04:00.105
You know your platform is just as good.
00:04:00.105 --> 00:04:02.848
You know you may not be on television, but what does that mean?
00:04:02.848 --> 00:04:04.526
Your platform is just as good.
00:04:04.526 --> 00:04:07.710
Who am I to judge and say my platform is bigger or better than yours?
00:04:07.710 --> 00:04:10.086
Your platform is just as great.
00:04:11.020 --> 00:04:15.229
Man, I appreciate it, man, I appreciate the words of encouragement.
00:04:15.229 --> 00:04:17.447
Man, you don't know how much that means.
00:04:17.447 --> 00:04:21.901
So, JD, May can you tell us a little bit about your show?
00:04:21.901 --> 00:04:22.862
That's why I'm here.
00:04:24.142 --> 00:04:33.769
You know, the premise of my show is I wanted to create a platform for everyone to come and tell their story of how they turned tragedy into triumph.
00:04:33.769 --> 00:04:44.617
And the whole base of my show came from me being a broken man and basically I set my phone up in my room one day and I just started talking about all the things that I was broken from.
00:04:44.617 --> 00:04:55.221
It didn't start off as a talk show because I didn't go to school for radio or broadcasting and I didn't grow up as a child saying, hey, I want to be a talk show host or I want to be this on television.
00:04:55.221 --> 00:05:04.968
It just came from me setting my phone up in my room because I was a broken man and just spilling the beans of all the things I was broken from in life and from a broken marriage.
00:05:04.968 --> 00:05:10.435
And then it just kind of like spiraled to what we see today, which is a talk show.
00:05:10.435 --> 00:05:14.786
But I didn't start off as a talk show, but you know start from there.
00:05:15.728 --> 00:05:21.288
Yeah, I mean just to admit that you started out because you said you was a broken man.
00:05:21.288 --> 00:05:23.973
You know that speaks a lot right there, man.
00:05:23.973 --> 00:05:27.000
So tell us something, man.
00:05:27.000 --> 00:05:31.088
How are you enjoying your new studio, man, your new downtown studio?
00:05:31.781 --> 00:05:33.788
Oh man, it's incredible.
00:05:33.788 --> 00:05:45.483
I mean like I'm still in awe because I mean, downtown Chicago is like the place you want to be in the midst of everything, to be a talk show host and have a studio downtown Chicago and that was always my dream.
00:05:45.483 --> 00:05:59.374
I'm still tripping because I'm like not only am I downtown, but I'm in the heart of downtown place where, like, it don't make it, still don't make sense, but I'm here and to be downtown chicago.
00:05:59.374 --> 00:06:05.951
I can't wait to get in there and do, uh, our first, which is going to be simply incredible.
00:06:05.951 --> 00:06:07.615
It's mind-blowing.
00:06:07.615 --> 00:06:12.286
I mean, the guests that we're having now is incredible.
00:06:12.286 --> 00:06:14.247
They're all happy because of the new studio.
00:06:14.247 --> 00:06:16.406
This is what God wanted me to do, man.
00:06:17.439 --> 00:06:18.987
Man, that's cool, man that's cool.
00:06:18.987 --> 00:06:32.994
So, based on your experience, man I was reading your bio Tell us what can $200 and a dream take you wow, you're right.
00:06:33.095 --> 00:06:36.079
I started my talk show with $200.
00:06:36.079 --> 00:06:39.612
No one knew this, but that's all I had to my name at the time.
00:06:39.612 --> 00:06:40.915
I had $200.
00:06:40.915 --> 00:06:43.122
And I said this $200 is going to have to work for me.
00:06:43.122 --> 00:06:54.355
And I realized that a lot of times people don't even start, that they may have a dream or something that they want to do, but then they'll look at the money.
00:06:54.355 --> 00:06:55.557
It could be $10.
00:06:55.557 --> 00:06:56.478
It could be $50.
00:06:56.478 --> 00:06:58.521
And they'll be like I don't have no money to start.
00:06:58.521 --> 00:07:09.173
But I realized that if you just start, you'll never know who you can become, you'll never know where you could go if you just start.
00:07:09.593 --> 00:07:26.321
And that $200 turned into hundreds of thousands of dollars five years later, all because I believed and all because I didn't want to give up and all because I always saw greater in me and because I wanted to change the whole trajectory of my life.
00:07:26.321 --> 00:07:34.247
I got out of fear and I told myself every day that I was going to win, no matter what.
00:07:34.247 --> 00:07:34.990
And I kept going.
00:07:34.990 --> 00:07:38.961
I didn't care about what nobody said about me, what nobody thought about me.
00:07:38.961 --> 00:07:47.194
I didn't care if anyone talked about me, because I had a dream and a vision in my head that I was going to do this, I was going to call it and everything that's happened for me.
00:07:47.194 --> 00:07:51.552
Now, corey, I'm not even surprised, because I saw it Long ago.
00:07:51.552 --> 00:07:52.798
I saw everything.
00:07:55.012 --> 00:08:13.682
And you know what and that's the thing, man, you said a couple of key things Is that sometimes a lot of people don't see your vision and they don't see your dreams, and so sometimes people want to knock it, but as long as you see what God has in front of you, that's the only thing that matters, man.
00:08:14.230 --> 00:08:15.776
Yeah, I got to say this too, corey.
00:08:15.776 --> 00:08:24.502
What a lot of people didn't see is when I was working I was saving every dime and every penny to pay for my talk show.
00:08:24.502 --> 00:08:34.962
And when people were asleep at night, I was surfing the YouTube watching Oprah Winfrey and Arsenio Hall and all of the talk show greats.
00:08:34.962 --> 00:08:36.274
I was watching all of them.
00:08:36.274 --> 00:08:37.455
I was studying them.
00:08:37.455 --> 00:08:42.442
I would watch how they would sit, how they would walk on the stage eye contact.
00:08:42.442 --> 00:08:44.177
I would watch all this stuff.
00:08:44.177 --> 00:08:45.979
I paid attention and I learned from it.
00:08:45.979 --> 00:08:48.277
Youtube was like my university.
00:08:49.480 --> 00:08:49.701
Matt.
00:08:49.701 --> 00:08:57.831
I mean it's just like Kobe watching Jordan and padding his game after Jordan, you know.
00:08:57.831 --> 00:09:02.399
I mean you got to watch people that did it before you and that had success.
00:09:02.399 --> 00:09:04.663
That's the blueprint, yeah.
00:09:04.663 --> 00:09:17.309
So tell us, man, tell us about some of the songs you have written and some of the songs you may have been a part of written and some of the songs you may have been a part of.
00:09:18.590 --> 00:09:23.293
Well, I helped co-write and produce, and also some background on Howard Hewitt's Love of my Own.
00:09:23.293 --> 00:09:27.273
I co-wrote Don't Cry for Little G.
00:09:27.273 --> 00:09:28.839
Gary Jenkins of the group Silk.
00:09:28.839 --> 00:09:52.570
I did many, many, many songs with Danny Boy from you know, who's now back, signed with Death Row Records Devin Golder, christy D, like so many, the group rep I mean there's so many artists right now I can't even that's put me on the spot, but there's so many artists, so many things I've done.
00:09:52.831 --> 00:09:53.472
I know, man?
00:09:53.472 --> 00:10:01.150
I mean, that's just part of your background, that's part of your you, hey?
00:10:01.150 --> 00:10:10.302
So tell us a little bit about your passion for country music and a new venture that you're into right now.
00:10:11.985 --> 00:10:12.346
Oh, wow.
00:10:12.346 --> 00:10:14.057
You know I've always loved country music.
00:10:14.057 --> 00:10:25.446
What to be a part of it in which we think, all of the partners who are part of this new venture, with this new artist that we think is going to be simply amazing to the world.
00:10:25.446 --> 00:10:27.515
His name is Emmanuel Lee.
00:10:27.515 --> 00:10:35.033
We think he's going to be a generation of talent to the world and also in the country world.
00:10:35.033 --> 00:10:37.677
It kind of fell in my lap.
00:10:37.677 --> 00:10:39.934
I'm just grateful to be a part of the whole situation.
00:10:41.759 --> 00:10:42.571
Oh man, that's cool.
00:10:42.571 --> 00:10:44.278
I wish you great success in that.
00:10:44.278 --> 00:10:44.519
Man.
00:10:44.519 --> 00:10:51.942
I know you're a busy man, man, I know you got somewhere to go, so is there anything else that you would like to share with us?
00:10:51.942 --> 00:10:55.876
Any new projects coming up on the horizon that we can look out?
00:10:55.918 --> 00:10:57.860
for is the talk show.
00:10:57.860 --> 00:11:08.080
Um, my first uh film day in the new building is July 7th and, man, I can't wait to film that building.
00:11:08.080 --> 00:11:30.504
We have some incredible guests that were introduced to me and my staff and there's just so many phenomenal people that are involved with us now, now that we are in this new space, we're in downtown Chicago, we have access to so much I mean celebrity guests, so many powerful and influential people just in that arena alone.
00:11:30.504 --> 00:11:31.654
So I'm very excited.
00:11:31.654 --> 00:11:33.716
So, really, that's my main focus.
00:11:33.716 --> 00:11:36.216
Of course, I'm in the gym all the time.
00:11:36.216 --> 00:11:38.600
I want to stay in shape because, you know, I want to look good on camera.
00:11:38.600 --> 00:11:49.830
I'm just getting really, really focused because I have a dream to go and I'm just, I'm thirsty, focused because I have a dream to go and I'm just thirsty to get to the next level.
00:11:51.452 --> 00:12:01.638
I take as many people as I can with me to be successful, because my mom used to always say if you get to the top by yourself, you're not successful, you're a bum.
00:12:01.638 --> 00:12:07.618
Once you get to the top, you got to take as many people as you can along with you.
00:12:07.618 --> 00:12:08.620
Don't go by yourself.
00:12:08.620 --> 00:12:11.664
Take with you, don't go by yourself.
00:12:11.664 --> 00:12:15.019
Winners don't get to the top by themselves.
00:12:15.019 --> 00:12:18.599
They get to the top because they have helped people get there with them.
00:12:18.599 --> 00:12:19.942
So that's my goal.
00:12:19.942 --> 00:12:24.457
It's everyone that's on my team, that work with me and who's ever a part of my dream.
00:12:24.457 --> 00:12:28.144
I want us all to live incredible, amazing lives.
00:12:29.691 --> 00:12:32.559
Man, and I wish you great success, man.
00:12:32.559 --> 00:12:41.918
I hope you get to where you're going and take the people that's been with you, been riding with you all this time, and I wish you nothing but the best, man.
00:12:41.918 --> 00:12:43.736
I appreciate you for coming on today.
00:12:44.510 --> 00:12:45.876
I have one last thing to say.
00:12:45.876 --> 00:12:49.176
This is what I want people to take.
00:12:49.176 --> 00:12:54.717
From this whole interview that you and I have, I learned that words are powerful.
00:12:54.717 --> 00:13:01.942
I learned to say, like I said, I hope I can do this.
00:13:01.942 --> 00:13:10.644
If you say you hope, then in your mind you kind of like doubting yourself I can do it.
00:13:10.644 --> 00:13:23.556
So, no matter what, I be very careful about the words I choose, because words are powerful and once you put it into the universe, once you put it into the atmosphere, you've already put it out there.
00:13:23.556 --> 00:13:26.515
So always say things that I want to see.
00:13:26.515 --> 00:13:28.038
I never say what I don't see.
00:13:28.038 --> 00:13:29.361
I say what I want to see.
00:13:29.461 --> 00:13:34.158
I spoke this new building that we're into downtown Chicago.
00:13:34.158 --> 00:13:35.421
I spoke it into existence.
00:13:35.421 --> 00:13:40.119
I didn't have it, I didn't know where it was coming from, but I spoke it into existence.
00:13:40.119 --> 00:13:42.453
I say every day I'm going to be downtown Chicago.
00:13:42.453 --> 00:13:46.797
I don't know where the office is, but someone's going to call me and I'm going to be downtown Chicago.
00:13:46.797 --> 00:13:49.278
We're going to have a space downtown Chicago.
00:13:49.278 --> 00:13:51.639
I would say it every day until I would be up.
00:13:51.639 --> 00:13:57.461
Even I would drive down to town Chicago and say, yeah, I'm going to be maybe somewhere in this area, and it happens.
00:13:57.461 --> 00:13:59.236
So words are powerful.
