I never wanted to work in Inclusion.
I'm not passionate about Diversity.
In 2009, I attended Barack Obama’s inauguration
6 months later I quit my job.
Reading a magazine article transformed my life:
On January 20th, 2009 I was at the West Front of the United States Capital Building.
1.8 million of us were inspired on that cold day.
At that time I wanted to change my life but I didn’t know what to do.
My inspiration came from a place I didn’t expect.
At the time I was working as a Chartered Accountant.
Every month I received a copy of “Accountancy” magazine.
Normally, this was as thrilling as you might expect 😂.
This month was different.
The magazine had a picture of Barack Obama on the cover.
There was an article called “It does matter if you’re Black or White”
It was about the apparent lack of senior Black Accountants in the UK.
I wanted to know more but I didn’t know what to do.
I contacted the people who I expected to have an answer.
- My professional body: the ICAEW
- All of the Professional Accounting Bodies the UK
- The Big 4 Accounting firms.
They couldn’t explain the issues I raised.
I was compelled to find the answer.
I quit my job to get the answers for myself.
This led me to a PhD at the London School of Economics.
I learned more than I expected.
Using a unique combination of professional expertise and academic rigour.
I’m on a mission
