It's not often a twenty-six year old slugger becomes available for
baseball teams. You'd have to hold a good hand of poker to pull what
the New York Mets accomplished on Sunday night. They went all in for
Juan Soto to be the face of their franchise. As baseball fans alike,
mainly the Yankees who'd traded for him last offseason from San Diego
and getting to the World Series this past fall.
Unfortunately, the Yankees fell shorter than being minimum height to
ride rollercoasters in a theme park. Their historical franchise and the
pinstripes couldn't swing a grand slam in keeping Soto. Enter the New
York Mets, who were in the mix throughout for weeks as dialogue
heated up in the cold Winter Meetings. It was anxiety for both fan bases
as they stayed glued to social media outlets.
Once news broke Soto had agreed with the Mets, it was an early
Christmas for Queens. An organization who needed a franchise
changing player to takeover the Big Apple. This was their moment and
boy did it ever happen without all the rumors from unlikely sources. A
record breaking deal of 15 years/$765 million dollars was the
grandfather offer Mets Owner Steve Cohen laid out for Soto and agent
Scott Boras. Being the guy and face of a franchise versus just another
Yankee playing second fiddle to Aaron Judge.
Soto is one of the premiere young hitters in baseball and just getting
started. Winning a World Series with the Washington Nationals in 2019
before getting traded to San Diego. Arriving in Bronx, it was cool and all
but when your best player doesn't live up to expectations, you have to
do what's best for your career.
Soto arrived in Queens as he put the Mets home jersey on with smiles.
A young player who can be marketable and build a championship
culture for the present and beyond. He seen the Yankees future was
basic; whereas Queens presented an opportunity to win and write his
own legacy. Winning with the Yankees is okay and you'll be beloved.
Playing in orange and blue gives you a sense of pride that Mets fans will
be bold and loud.
He's the GUY in Queens and this team is destined to win it all in the
next couple years. With the richest owner in Major League Baseball,
Steve Cohen isn't done making moves as now the real work begins
keeping core guys and swinging trades for players who can give you the
best chance to capture a World Series. With several players rumored to
be linked to the Mets, Cohen will push the chips in the middle and go for
it.
New York Mets fans have celebrated all week since this monumental
signing took place. Yankees fans were left asking and questioning their
front office as to how this happened. It's one thing to throw a pitch and
miss; but when bat connects with ball, it's a masterful highlight. It's a
new day for Mets fans as the "King of Queens" is here to be THE GUY.
Added pressure and expectations come with these contracts; but Soto
is destined for greatness in Queens. Congrats Mets fans and Merry
Christmas!
Stai tuned.
