As the final weeks of our beloved 2024 NFL season is gearing up for
playoff seeding, we're at a crossroads. Who's going to win the MVP? A
quarterback centric award, not too many other skilled position players
have held the honor. We've had dynamic running backs, receivers, tight
ends, but it's a quarterback award regardless. Allow me to breakdown
the potential candidates of this award for your 2024 NFL MVP.
QB Josh Allen: Buffalo Bills
Allen is having one of his best seasons statistically as the Bills clinched
the AFC East Division title for the fifth consecutive season. We can say
the statement win over Kansas City cemented his spot as a candidate.
With a 64 completion percentage; to go along with 2,543 passing yards.
18 touchdowns to 5 interceptions, he's flourished in a balanced offense.
Being able to distribute the football around without force feeding
anybody. Good offensive line, running game and eliminating the
turnovers have been key to Allen's MVP numbers. The biggest question
is can he win THE big game come postseason? Either way, he'll need to
elevate his play and dethrone Patrick Mahomes in a potential clash
come mid January.
RB Saquon Barkley: Philadelphia Eagles
Who would've thought a change of scenery would benefit Barkley
joining rival Philadelphia? It's been a season of greatness filled with
highlight reels including the reverse hurdle and setting Eagles records.
Barkley's numbers thus far: 223 rushing attempts, 1,392 rushing yards;
with an average of 6.2 yards per carry, 10 touchdowns. Receiving wise:
27 catches, 257 receiving while averaging 9.5 yards per catch. The
biggest stat: (1) fumble on the season. Very crucial in making his case
for league MVP. Credit, a very good offensive line, quarterback and
roster to make his job easier. Barkley is still one of the premiere running
backs and showcasing his greatness that was held back in New York.
RB Derrick Henry: Baltimore Ravens
One of the best running backs of this era has found his stride in
Baltimore, Henry is piling up usual stats and getting stronger each
week. As it stands: 221 rushing attempts, 1,325 yards on 6 yards per
carry. 13 rushing touchdowns. One of the best receiving running backs
as well: 10 receptions, 96 receiving yards with 9.6 yards per catch to go
along with 2 receiving touchdowns. King Henry has been the Ravens
security blanket and given a new dynamic in Baltimore's offense. At one
point during the season, fans were calling him an early MVP candidate
as he ran wild on opposing defenses. His explosiveness can scare
anyone at the age of thirty. He'll have a tough time catching Barkley with
votes as each week winds down. In a league where it's any given
Sunday, might as well say "King Henry" will be among the finalists for
MVP.
The month of December will further clarify who's going to run wild or
come up small with each candidate. Each week matters and how a
player produces factors into the "Most Valuable Player."
Stai tuned.
