When it comes to building the career and ultimately the life you want, you cannot sit in the back seat. Make a plan and work the plan! That’s what our podcast guest, Tatiana Chamorro, emphasized in Season 2, Episode 1. We learn about her journey from Costa Rica to Texas, where she becomes a digital marketing entrepreneur.
Tatiana walks us through what it looked like for her and her family to move from Central America to Texas so her husband could pursue a Masters degree. While it did not always feel fun or glamorous, Tatiana and her husband made a five year plan. They wrote down what they wanted individually and together and WORKED THE PLAN.
Tatiana chose digital marketing because it was something that fueled her. She decided to “focus on doing what [she] loved” regardless of the cultural differences and expectations that come along with being Latina.
As an international or first generation student some of the best advice Tatiana offered included:
- Identify your potential hurdles as an international student early. This gives you time to fit these action items in your timeline for achieving your goal.
- Research opportunities, resources, and people associated with your school and/ or career. This sets the tone for your time in school and how you can make big moves for your career.
- There will be cultural differences that come along with being in a country or school that you’ve never been to before. It will take time, but you will find your footing.
Tatiana’s Major Keys:
- “Instead of just focusing on the right now, focus on the five years from now.”
- “Ask yourself: is what I’m doing now, helping me get to my main goal?”
- A mentor is someone to guide you through your path and encourage you along the way. They don’t have to be super successful all around, but they do have to take being “on your team” as seriously as you do.
