I sat down with one of the greatest seed investors in history, Mike Maples Jr. who has a track record of identifying companies which can return 100X+ at the very earliest stages.
One of the interesting perspectives he shared was comparing great founders to NFL quarterbacks like Patrick Mahomes. He says, 'You don't know what play they're going to run necessarily...but you're betting on the fact that this guy's in the entrepreneurial field is kinda like Patrick Mahomes. Give them the ball and wait to be amazed.'
Maples Jr. further explains that his job is to ensure the founder is the right person on the right playing field. If they succeed, it's a win for everyone involved. However, he remains unattached to whether the product, as it is, is the end product. It's a unique viewpoint that challenges the common belief that product is everything in a startup.
One question that often arises in the startup world is when should a founder pivot versus staying the course? Is it obvious when you have massive product market fit? We delve into this and more in our conversation with Maples Jr.
