To begin with, we have Freedom of Expression here in Canada, not Free speech. Free Speech is an American right. Freedom of Expression (read all about it here:https://www.justice.gc.ca/eng/csj-sjc/rfc-dlc/ccrf-ccdl/check/art2b.html)
To sum it up: Canada believes freedom of expression is at the core of human individuality and is one of the essential foundations of a safe and prosperous society.
The right of everyone to hold opinions without interference and the right to freedom of expression are in Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and reaffirmed in Article 19 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.
This includes the freedom to seek, receive and impart information and ideas of all kinds, whether orally, in writing or in print, or through any other media of choice. Certain restrictions are only permissible when in line with international human rights law.
1) The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms guarantees the rights and freedoms set out in it subject only to such reasonable limits prescribed by law as can be demonstrably justified in a free and democratic society.
2) Everyone has the following fundamental freedoms: (a) freedom of conscience and religion; (b) freedom of thought, belief, opinion and expression, including freedom of the press and other media of communication; (c) freedom of peaceful assembly; and (d) freedom of association.
The "fReEdUmB cOnVoy" folks conveniently leave out this part: "subject only to such reasonable limits prescribed by law as can be demonstrably justified in a free and democratic society." Because it really doesn't fit their narrative.
