UAWIL #120: David Bowie - Let's Dance

UAWIL #120: David Bowie - Let's Dance

David Bowie had his biggest selling album and single with Let's Dance but was it what he wanted?

David Bowie achieved a cult following and critical acclaim in the 1970s for his glam-rock, gender bending image and style. He was a huge influence to artists all around the world and is the 9th best selling artist in the UK. However, huge commercial success eluded him, especially in the US. And following the murder of John Lennon in 1980, Bowie decided not to tour and became a bit of a recluse at his home in Switzerland.

After singing a big record contract with EMI in America, he decided to team up with legendary producer Nile Rodgers to create his 1983 release Let's Dance. With the help of Rodgers and his R&B influences, Bowie created an album bringing together R&B, pop. new wave and his own style. Thanks to his new sound and MTV, Let's Dance went on to sell over 10 million copies worldwide, his biggest seller ever and the lead single was also his biggest seller. But did Bowie want to be an international pop sensation? Was it a musical style and path he wanted to stay on? As usual we go track x track and try to better understand how this one fits in his catalog on UAWIL #120.
