This is the first time that Tim Burton kinda phones it in. It’s also where he falls off of an amazing winning streak. I’m well aware that he was rushed but what you commit to film is all that matters. The audience who paid 15 bucks for a ticket don’t care that you couldn’t do re-shoots.
I've come to the conclusion that Planet of The Apes (2001) isn't all that bad. Tim Roth, Michael Clarke Duncan and Paul Giamatti give really inspired performances through the make up. Also the prosthetic ape effects are pretty incredible, and thanks to Rick Baker, they hold up perfectly.
Mark Wahlberg is the weak link. He's woefully miscast, underwritten and poorly directed. Matt Damon or Russell Crowe was the better choice in my opinion.
The film itself is a perfect time capsule of blockbuster cinema pre-9/11.
While the POTA ‘01 isn't terrible by any stretch of the imagination every time I watch it, I completely forget about it. Maybe it's for the best.
