AFTERWORDS: Black Christmas (2006)

AFTERWORDS: Black Christmas (2006)
Look nothing will ever come close to the magic that Bob Clark committed to the screen in 1974’s Black Christmas. (or A Christmas Story for that matter)

Black Christmas 2006 is the type of movie that a 14-year-old version of me would love to find in a local multiplex. There’s pretty girls, some gnarly gore and the movie just breezes by with it’s 100 minute runtime.

If you still haven’t seen it, now is the time to cash in and then go listen to my holiday episode all about it.

That being said, there is some really graphic and disturbing stuff happening in this film. In fact it’s down right gruesome when it wants to be.

I feel like for some reason this film is finally getting its flowers. it was shoved under the rug for a very long time. Lot of folks just plain forgot that it existed.

People love holiday horror films, and this was an under seen gem of it’s era. The passage of time has only helped make this film, even more wildly nostalgic. 2006 seems like a lifetime away. Mainly because that film was 17 years ago now.

I think the fondness and love has grown for this film in a very profound way. This can only happen organically through the passage of time.

Christ, the cellphones alone time stamp the movie in a very specific way.

Is it the greatest film ever made? Is it the unseen gem in your horror holiday checklist? Your mileage will vary, but you know what, you could do a lot worse as far as Christmas slashers are concerned.

To that fact, it’s a pretty solid reimagining that works better than it has any right to be. Even under the immense pressure of trying to top the original, the film finds its own footing and works in spite of it. That in of itself is a Christmas miracle.
