When I was growing up, action heroes were the biggest thing on the planet. No matter how shitty my life got, I had those action stars. I’d spend hours cutting out articles and collecting posters. It consumed my very existence.
As a kid who got his share of bullying, these action movies were an escape for me. A “revenge fantasy” if you will. A necessary tool that helped me cope.
I always admired Steven Seagal’s calm, cool approach. He knows that he’s a big dude, but more importantly he knows that he’s an incredible master of martial arts. He oozed a confidence that was so seductive to a dumb kid like me.
I figured I would start taking martial arts and maybe it would bring me closer to who I wanted to be. Largely it did.
What I didn’t count on was the passage of time. Why? Well, it exposed the fact that Steven Seagal is a genuinely trash human being. Not just because he’s a delusional weirdo but for the victims he left in his wake. Seagal sexually assaulted actresses, intentionally hurt stunt performers, and now he’s training Vladimir Putin’s private army. In my book, that makes him an enemy of the state. It’s an act of betrayal against our country, the same country that made him a mega star.
On a lighter note, here’s my top five Steven Seagal movies:
5. Marked for Death
4. Above the Law
3. Out for Justice
2. Under Siege
1. Hard to Kill
