Impacted as it was by the Hollywood strikes last year, when Paramount beamed into San Diego earlier this year to give Comic-Con the first look at Strange New Worlds season three, things were… weird. Instead of a trailer, fans were treated to a scene from an episode from the new season, and it was one that raised some questions (and a few Vulcan ears) that irked diehard fans who would otherwise be excited for what Strange New Worlds has been cooking in Star Trek‘s past. Now at New York Comic Con, however, the show is in a much better place to tease what’s coming.
When we last left the Enterprise crew at the end of season two, things looked decidedly less strange and new, as the ship fell awry of a group of Gorn invading a Federation colony world, who had already done a number on the USS Cayuga, the ship captained by Pike’s paramour, Marie Batel (Wynonna Earp‘s Melanie Scrofano). That’s a dark turn for a show that had literally just done a musical episode, but at least it looks like most of our heroes (and some familiar new-old ones, like Martin Quinn’s young Montgomery Scott) are going to make it out of that grisly encounter in one piece for all this new adventuring.
The Strange New Worlds clip shown at NYCC’s Star Trek Universe panel picks up in the finale’s immediate aftermath of season two’s finale: the Enterprise is getting thrased by the Gorn, and Pike is a little shellshocked from all the chaos. With all that’s going on, and the crew’s scrambling to both survive and come up with a way to make sure they can rescue their lost friends.
Beyond the rescue mission, Paramount was coy on what other adventures the Enterprise crew finds itself in. But they’ll meet as least one new face, as Rhys Darby (Our Flag Means Death) will guest star at some point in the season. As for when will Star Trek: Strange New Worlds return? Paramount was vague, save for that it’ll come back sometime in 2025.
