The Power of Language: Uncovering and Challenging Systems of Oppression

Language can be so powerful in directing us to see things as they really are and how it can be used to challenge systems of oppression!

In this thought provoking episode, I chat with the fabulous Ettie Baily King who is an inclusive communication consultant.

We talk about:

  • how you can feel brave, confident and supported as you embed anti-oppression in your conversations and communications at work
  • We dive into the world of inclusive language, where we can avoid harm and dismantle myths that normalize problematic systems.
  • We'll explore topics like ableism, genderism, and racism, and learn how to talk about people in ways that respect their unique identities.

You’ll discover the importance of using anti-oppressive language, being specific, and avoiding default language that puts everyone under the same umbrella. We will also dissect some new terms and concepts like "woke washing" and "white gazing."

Join us as we explore the journey towards justice and how language is the key to understanding the systems we have consciously and unconsciously bought into. Plus, we'll share tips on how to make others feel safe with the language we use.

More about Ettie’s work on her website, and on LinkedIN where she posts great content.
