About this episode
Deneen L. Garrett, the podcast creator & host ,took a few months off from her podcast coaching journey to focus on personal growth and building relationships. Since launching her podcast in April 2020, she had been following her coach, Danielle Desir Corbett, and actively participating in her community. Learning a great deal from Danielle, Deneen even received speaking opportunities that exceeded her expectations. After a refreshing break, Deneen is now back and has been recording episodes since September.
Deneen and the Women of Color: An Intimate Conversation podcast’s mission is to empower women of color and elevate their voices, inspiring them to live their dream lifestyles. Leading by example, Deneen aims to motivate others through her own life experiences. Deneen’s ultimate goal is to empower women of color to achieve their dreams and live their best lives. One key aspect of this dream lifestyle for Deneen is travel, which she considers a top priority. Whether it's exploring local destinations or venturing to international ones, London for her 1st Beyoncé concert or practicing her French in Vieux Montreàl, travel plays a significant role in Deneen’s vision, and she encourages others to embrace new places and experiences. Ultimately, Deneen is dedicated to making a positive impact on the lives of millions of women of color, relying on the support and engagement of her listeners to help her achieve this goal.
To prioritize her well-being and take a break from the pressures of content creation, Deneen decided to take a two-month pause from social media. During this time, she aimed to reconnect with herself and fully immerse in her own life. The constant pressure to create and engage with content on social media can be overwhelming and time-consuming. Stepping away from this cycle allowed Deneen to simply be present and experience life without the expectations of social media. This pause also provided an opportunity for reflection on her podcasting journey, leading to improvements such as incorporating intros and outros into her episodes. Overall, the Deneen's social media break served as a way to prioritize her own well-being and temporarily step away from the demands of content creation.

About Deneen
Deneen L. Garrett is a Women's Empowerment speaker and podcaster, and creator & host of the Women of Color: An Intimate Conversation (formerly An Intimate Conversation with Women of Color) Podcast, and a Dream Lifestyle coach. Deneen specializes in helping women of color (WOC) who want more out of life live boldly to create a dream life.
In January of 2021, Deneen saw a tweet (don’t recall by whom) about going beyond Dream cars and Dream houses to pursuing a Dream Lifestyle. As she was preparing to retire from a 20+ year career as a Diversity & Inclusion/Talent Development professional this resonated with Deneen. She decided to chose “live” as her word for the year and “Live a Dream Lifestyle“ as her focus.
A Dream Life (style) is unique to each person. Using her 3+ D’s system; Dream, Decide, Drive led Deneen to “travel”; the main component of her Live a Dream Lifestyle™️. This consists of: Hopping on a plane to visit a museum. Meeting friends on an island. Spending a holiday abroad. Travel allows Deneen new experiences such as connecting with people of different cultures, tasting their food and seeing as they do. Additionally, Deneen loves to attend events; concerts, museums, games locally and while traveling. This along with impacting the lives of others is what makes up Deneen's Dream Life.
Having worked alongside women who dedicated 20+ years of their lives to their jobs and families and doing little for themselves, Deneen recognized many were delaying “living”. She was also saddened by a family member who retired then reentered the job force doing the very thing she disliked. This compelled Deneen to make it her mission to empower women of color to Live a Dream Life NOW. Not tomorrow, not after the kids are grown, and not after retirement. N O W!!!
What is your dream life? It could be finding joy in your work, pursuing entrepreneurship, or spending your days volunteering. Whatever you decide, Deneen shares the tools/mindset shifts/motivation to drive you towards YOUR Dream Life. Connect with Deneen to make your dream life a reality!

This week's guest is a women's empowerment speaker. A dream lifestyle coach and the creator and host of this podcast. Women of Color in intimate conversation. You guessed it, it's me. Hello everybody. I am back. I took off several months. I had been sharing about my podcasts coaching journey, which ended April 30. It was an awesome experience. Oh my god, I so thoroughly enjoy the experience and learning the growth. And the relationship building gave me an opportunity to get closer to my coach Danielle, who I had been following and being a part of her community ever since I launched in April of 2020. So I definitely learned so much from her. She positioned me to receive speaking opportunities, and it was more than what I could expect. So I'm back. I have been recording since September. I went ahead and started I scheduled the recordings into summer because of the overwhelming response that I was getting from people or just the the reach the reach out. So many people were reaching out wanting to be on a podcast and so I went ahead and scheduled and so you'll get I think I have about four guests recording so far and I'm still recording.

So new episodes are to follow. So as always, please continue to share and I want to hear from you. So send me an email at Deneen at Deneen l garrett.com. You can also tweet about the podcast on x. I was gonna say Twitter but the the old Twitter or x formerly known as Twitter, at Deneen l Garrett definitely want to hear from you and use the hashtag WOC i. So what's to come more conversations with women of color, who are living a dream life who are sharing their journeys of how they came? To do what it is that they're doing? And something new. We talked about the power in the pause, which is reflective of my two months social media pause. So I took off July and August I took a pause, no social media. And it was to get in touch with myself. It was to just be to be present to really experience life and not have the pressures of creating content. As we know when we're dealing with social media, and if we're wanting to reach people, we have to play the algo rhythm game. And basically, every day, you know, you have to create content every day and then you have to engage with that content. At least within the first hour of posting, and more so throughout the day, right. And it's not just about your content, it's about engaging with other people, right? So it takes time, it's time consuming, and it could be pressure, right? Because you feel like oh my god, I have to do this and whether you love it or not like if you absolutely love it, you know, then this is not about you, right? And I enjoy it at times. Again. It's just an expectation that others have put on us and when I say others, I mean whoever programs, the algorithm. So I'm back. And one of the main differences of what I took from my podcast coaching journey you've already seen and that's the I call them mini blocks. So my show notes are many blogs. And so that in itself is is something that takes time in being someone who, whenever I have to write, it's kind of like a block that goes up and it's like, oh my god, I have to get mentally prepared to do this thing. And so that's where I'm at with the show notes. Right. So like I said, I already have at least four recordings. And what's holding me up from publishing them is to actually take the time to do my show notes. So I'm being vulnerable here. I'm sharing, you know what I'm going through as a podcaster. Right? I'm just sharing with you letting you know more about me and to encourage you. So if you're in a same situation, whether it's regarding podcasting or anything, just to let you know you're not alone, and it's okay, take your time, right, you're in control of you your journey and what it is that you want to share with the world. So that's where I'm at. And so I've gotten a closer to that right I've already created my intro and my outro and that's something else. There was a time when I did have intros and outros and then I kind of got away from it. I listened to some other podcasts and I hear that they have them so I'm back to using the intros and outros. So we'll see if I want to keep that or how we use that going forward and actually let me know what you think. Right? Again, email me at Deneen at Deneen l garrett.com. And or tweet about it, right. I want to know what your preference is. Because you're the audience right? And I want to
Deneen L Garrett 6:22
give you what it is that you want. So I need to hear from you in order to know what that is. So some other things just you know, just excited about the whole process of the coaching journey. Then with Danielle the seer Corbett. She started a women of color podcasting community several years ago, in just taking up so much space, so much beautiful space and just opening the doors and paving the way for the rest of us. And so I have definitely greatly appreciated her and continuing to learn from her. And you know, seeing what it is that she's doing and in leaning and trusting into her guidance and her expertise. So also what I'm going to talk about and get into it a little bit more in another episode is my dream Lifestyle coaching program. I will record an episode that talks about how to live the dream lifestyle and the process that I have around that. And then what I'm offering to help others, right so my goal my mission is to elevate the voices of women of color and empower women of color to leave live a dream lifestyle. So I live my life that way. I live my life as an example to others as inspiration and motivation. So since like January of 2022 I've shared what I was doing, you know prior to letting people know that I had started a business and for me living a dream lifestyle number one is travel, travel, travel travel.
Deneen L Garrett 7:50
So if you've listened to my previous episodes, definitely within like the last six months or the last year you've heard me say that that travel is my number one and travel for me is not Oh, I'm going on this exotic. You know, vacation is not even that travel for me could be just hopping on a plane flying to Chicago, flying to New York going to the museum and coming right back. And also going to, you know those exotic or international destinations as well. And and the rest of this year in next year. My emphasis is on international travel. So I did renew my passport in May and so my first trip was to London to experience Beyonce. So I was at the very first London show, very first time seeing Beyonce and definitely you know, wanted the whole experience so I did give myself circle A so I was on a floor was right there, you know very close to the stage. And that was an experience being around people who so appreciate Beyonce and me appreciating her as an artist and then her work ethic is really what drives me or attracts me to Beyonce. And then let's see number two was to Panama. And that was a great experience. I'm also a lover of plants I collect plants, and so their of course is very lush and it's not just lush outside, they bring that indoors as well. So when I got back home, I wanted to keep that same spirit. So I bought three tropical plants, larger plants and actually ended up with a fourth one
and so you know, just loving that. And then I've been to Montreal not yes Montreal twice the first time I stayed in Old Montreal which I absolutely adored that. I'm being able to just walk out of my seat where I was staying and be right in the middle of things be in the thick of things. Thi qu e Beyonce the thick of things. And then a second time I went back for the black Montreal Film Festival. And so I stayed near that and so that was basically the place the arts. That's where I stayed and I do prefer Old Montreal and so again plant lover that I am notice the beautiful large elephant ears and banana plants and so yep, you can guess I bought from elephant here so I actually have three. So they came in three different grower paths. So I have three of them that I will grow in I already had a banana plant that I have been growing since March. And I actually have four elephant ears because I bought a a different kind so three of them are Jack elephant ears, and they're going to be ginormous at some points and of course I those that point they'll go outside. And then the other one is a different type of I don't recall the name of that one right now. But yes, that's what I love. I love plants.
Deneen L Garrett 11:34
My home is full of plants. I'm looking around how can I restructure, you know, move things around to make more space for plants. And then also for art. So I'm a collector of black art in my dining room is my dining room art gallery. And so filling up the walls, they're taking it into other spaces. I also have art in my office. The art in my office is more reflective of creations from family friends as well. As from my travels. My dining room is original art by black artists. So I'm a collector of plants. I'm a collector of black art and then also I'm a collector of gym shoes, or maybe in you where you are you call them sneakers or you might just call them Nikes or you might just call them footwear. Mini Plange is a Ghanian designer and she collaborated with Lebron James to design several iterations of of shoes, and I have three of her nope, let me back up. I have four of five. So the third iteration came out with two different styles. And I just ordered the one style because the other style was similar to a previous I am gonna look to get that other one because I want to say that I do have all of them. And after going to the Black footwear, we're forum here in Detroit. I was introduced to more or exposed to more black women designing gym shoes. And so I want to look into that. So now I'm also a collector of black women, gym shoe sneaker footwear designers and so wanting to increase my collection there. So I've talked a lot about myself what I'm up to you know just want you to know more about me what it is that I love. What brings me joy how I live a dream lifestyle because all of this is part of my lifestyle is all part of my dream. Lifestyle. Number one is travel, attending events and being VIP at events is my thing as well. And then a collector so a collector of black art a collector of black gym shoes or gym shoes by black women designers, and then my plants. So again, I'm back and we have new episodes to drop with some amazing phenomenal women. Looking forward to sharing those episodes with you all definitely again wanting to hear from you. Again, email me at Deneen at Deneen l garrett.com. And or tweets on x at Deneen l Garrett and use the hashtag WOC I so thank you for listening.
